Not that there's anyone he can call to give him answers. The two people in the world that he was closest to are no longer there for him: one is dead, and the other might just as well be.

And this is where the questions really start colliding into each other like bumper cars at a fairground, because if nothing else is clear, then one fact seems certain: Frankie is somehow involved in this.

He had barely told her anything about his circumstances before she went ballistic on him, warning him to stay away. It was almost as if she had been waiting for news like this, was prepared for a distress call. Did she ask for details? Did she suggest, even for a moment, that he might be pulling a fast one, that it was all some sort of joke? Admittedly, this was not his style, but even so, to be so sure that what he was saying was true, that Emilio had been killed, that he had been shot at, that cops were responsible... it was damning evidence. He'd seen Frankie more sceptical of one of Emilio's fantastic made-up stories than she had been of his woeful tale.
